Garden roof

How to make an ecological use of some lost space

“First of all, I wanted to esthetically improve my roof and the integration of my building into the environment. I wanted to optimize the use of available space and make use of some “lost” space. I also wanted to take an ecological step and reintroduce a bit of nature into the urban environment. This would help reduce urban CO2 and reintroduce biodiversity. I wanted to increase the thermal insulation of my building by cooling my roof. Finally, I was looking for a solution to the problem of flooding in my area.”

The project

Renovation of a green roof of a building occupied by the European Commission, located in Square Meeus, Brussels.

Architect: Jean-Louis De Coen
Infrarex Landscape architect: Bernard Capelle
Landscape Design Year: 08/2002-07/2003
Applicator: Asphalis
Roof surface: +/- 2300 m2

The challenge

There were multiple water infiltrations on two levels. Little information on the composition of the roof was available. The roof had to be completely cleared of existing earth and vegetation over a surface of 1300 m2. The occupation of the sites could not be interrupted.

The DERBIGUM solution

To recreate a light and removable space while improving the view from the main building and all the surrounding buildings. Selected composition: DERBICOAT S plus DERBIGUM anti-roots plus planted roof.

Why choose DERBIGUM?

“For a very long time I have been pleased with the quality of my contacts with this company and with its generous technical advice. The fact that DERBIGUM offers a ten-year guarantee covered by an insurance contract for each square meter implemented is proof of the reliability of this material.”
