Replacing an old BUR roof in dire need of repair with the goal of reflectivity and sustainability in mind.

The Project

The United States Postal Service main facility in Owensboro, KY had an existing 10-year-old coal  tar pitch BUR. The existing BUR was reported to have had leaks and other roof related issues since the original installation.

The Challenge

Since the existing roof had a history of problems, the entire system would have to be removed and replaced to ensure a long-term, watertight system. The United States Postal Service, as a government agency, looks for long-term performance, but also is obligated to explore options that promote energy efficiency and sustainability wherever feasible. Therefore, the owner’s goal was to choose a highly reflective roof membrane whose waterproofing life could be sustained in the future. The key was to choose a system and contractor that could coordinate the tear-off and installation to meet these concerns while keeping the building dry.

The DERBIGUM Solution

The chosen DerbiBrite system was a multi-layer system providing the contractor the ability to phase the construction of the new roof. By phasing the construction, the building remained watertight with the Derbibase Ultra base layer, despite one of the rainiest periods on record in Owensboro. The final DerbiBrite layer would not be applied until tear-off was complete avoiding the risk of pitch dust and debris. This provided a clean finished system with the desired reflectivity. The owner has a highly reflective roof with a 20-year Sustainable Guaranty that includes annual audits and the option to extend the guaranty another 20- years after the initial service life without the cost and disruption of a tear-off. High quality workmanship, a well designed system, a proven product and a 20-year Sustainable Guaranty provided the owner with the perfect combination.
