School Renovation
Is a renovation possible while the building is occupied?
The restoration work had to be done when the building was occupied. Disturbances therefore needed to be minimized.
The Project
Location: Timbers Elementary School, Humble, Texas.
Pat Winkler, principal of Timbers Elementary School, realized that the original roof was in such dire condition that immediate action had to be taken.
Roof consultant: Michael L. Hamilton Inc. (MHI)
Applicator: Construction Services Inc., Humble, Texas
The Challenge
Due to numerous roof leaks the school had to begin an immediate replacement of the roof system while classes were still in session. Extreme care had to be taken to avoid disruptions from noise or fumes during the installation of a new roof system. It was crucial to remove the debris daily and cautiously place it in safe dump boxes in an area inaccessible to the children. The tear-off equipment had to be stored away from the playground and surrounding area to ensure the safety of the children during recess and to prevent interruption of scheduled activities.
The DERBIGUM Solution
The project specification required a complete tear-off down to the LWC deck (a three-ply roof with a loose laid gravel surface). A PRS Modified Glass Base Sheet was mechanically fastened to the substrate, followed by a layer of DERBIGUM GP cold applied in PERMASTIC adhesive and a final top layer of DERBICOLOR GP-FR, also cold applied in PERMASTIC adhesive. Open flame was completely eliminated with the use of PERMASTIC cold adhesive to adhere the membrane layers and a hot air welder on the side and end laps – an ideal solution for both the workers and the building occupants.
