Reroof to make your building sustainable

Replacing an old BUR roof in dire need of repair with the goal of sustainability in mind.

Monarch Marking Plant

The Project

More than three (3) decades of weathering had taken their toll on the 188,000 square foot built-up roof (BUR) of the Monarch Marking plant in Dayton, OH.

A selection team made up of various personnel at the plant needed to choose a replacement system that would meet set criteria including longevity, watertight performance, expertise and logistics.

The Challenge

The goal was to choose a 30-year system that would remain watertight and handle the abuse of extensive rooftop traffic. The deck design was very unique and added to the installation challenges. The concrete deck consisted of 88 identical 42’ x 42’ “pods” sloped in the shape of a bowl to drain in the middle.

Strong adhesion was needed to resist slipping on the deck that sloped more than 3” per foot and the configuration provided limited access for material movement and equipment. The owner wanted all of these challenges met with an environmentally friendly solution that would limit disruption for the employees.

The DERBIGUM Solution

The committee felt that a DERBIGUM APP modified bitumen system was the only solution. The Derbigum Authorized Contractor provided the owner confidence in their workmanship and financial security. Two layers of DERBIGUM XPS provided extensive protection against the elements. The first layer was heat welded to assist with slip resistance and the second layer was adhered with PERMASTIC cold adhesive to provide an environmentally friendly low-VOC and low odor alternative.
